Kevin Prince joined the Army for the opportunities it afforded — he wanted to go to college.

Spc. Prince, 22, who was with the 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, out of Fort Irwin, Calif., was killed April 23 by a roadside bomb while he was on patrol in Iskandariyah, Iraq.

More than 100 mourners attended a memorial service Saturday for Prince in North Woodbury, Ohio, 45 miles northeast of Columbus. Visitation with the family was Sunday at a funeral home before Prince was buried at a cemetery in Plain City, where he grew up.

Pictures at the memorial showed Prince wearing a black tuxedo with a prom date and in fatigues holding a rifle.

His sister-in-law, Ember Prince, said God sent Kevin Prince to Iraq to help “protect the freedom we enjoy everyday.”
